Wednesday, 13 June 2012

A grandmother and two grandchildren were found dead hugging each other in a fire at their double story detached house at Kpg Rembus, Kota Samarahan today.

Uka Jenal aged 54 and her two grandson, Christiano Ronaldo ak Kegan, 6 and Wayne Rooney ak Austin, 4 perished in the fire which started at 2.19 pm.

The house owner, Uka’s husband, Tahir anak Saban, 57 said when the fire started, he was taking care of their grocery shop at the front.

He said his wife was taking care of their three grandsons including Ryann Ferdinand ak Fedrick aged 1 who survived.

Still in shock, Tahir said his wife saw smoke from the living room on the upper level. The three grandchildren were on the upper floor. She said her wife then carried Ryann out and asked him to carry him away from the flames.

Uka then went back to the house to see the other two grandsons but never returned.

It was believed that fire spread to the staircase and the three were unable to get out on time.

Firemen rushed to the scene and six of them went to the upper level to douse out the flames. They found the three bodies hugging each other in the sitting room on the top level.

Forty percent of the house was burned and losses were estimated to be over RM20,000.

The family had been staying there since 1994.

State Assemblyman for Muara Tuang, Datuk Seri Muhammad Ali Mahmud went to the scene after learning of the incident.

Ali said he would seek disaster and welfare assistance for Tahir  from the district office.
